become it before you do it

Hey you,

Some weeks you do it all. This wasn’t one of those weeks. Daycare was closed, work stayed busy, and we packed up and drove to Oklahoma City to see family. Somewhere in there, content just had to wait. I used to feel guilty about weeks like this. This time I didn’t. I’m okay with that, and I think you should be too when your weeks look like this.

One Thing to Think About This Week

I watched a TEDx talk this week that was tooooo damn good. Dr. Kim Foster talked about why change doesn’t stick… and it’s not because we lack willpower or the right habit tracker. It’s because we’re trying to force a new behavior onto an old identity.

Here’s the shift. Stop asking what should I do. Start asking who do I need to become. Once you believe you’re the kind of person who moves their body, drinks the water, shows up… the actions follow. They stop feeling forced.

I’ve been chewing on this all week. Not what am I doing, but who am I becoming while I do it.

Celebrate Your Wins

  • Held onto routine and workouts through a genuinely chaotic hybrid week of WFH and full time toddler duty
  • Let content take a back seat without spiraling about it
  • Kept leveling up the Notion systems I’m building for clients
  • Pulled off a smooth, low stress family road trip with a toddler… no small feat

Productivity Hack of the Week

The best productivity hack isn’t really a hack at all. It’s designing your environment so the right thing happens without you having to decide every time.

Think about it. Set up your workstation with a band or a walking pad before your shift starts, and movement just… happens. Use an app you trust for house and pet sitting, and an entire logistical headache disappears before a trip even starts.

What I’m Into This Week

App/Tech: TrustedHousesitters. We’ve used it for years for house and pet sitting whenever we travel and it has never let us down. If you want to try it, here’s my link.

Podcast/Other: Two TEDx talks that lived in my head this week… “How to Accomplish Anything You Want in Just 10 Minutes a Day” by Zee Najarian, and “How to Actually Change Your Habits” by Kim Foster. Both worth the watch and both really short. JUST DO IT, OKAY?

Life Snapshot

Personal Wins: Showed up for work and Ledger in the same week without either one falling apart.

Family Moments: Low key, no agenda time with family… golf cart, pool, perfect weather, zero plans.

Real-Life Relatability: We made 2 stops on the way back from OKC and I laid my eyes on a bag of Puppy Chow…. I was JUST talking about this snack. Did I buy it? Yes. Did I eat the ENTIRE bag while driving? Also yes.

One Last Thing

Here’s what I’m sitting with heading into next week: I’ve got a normal week, then San Diego, then a string of family visits back to back. The easy thing would be to let all of it slide until things “calm down.” But calm down isn’t coming… life just keeps moving.

So instead of waiting for a clear runway, I’m rearranging. Recommitting. Building the plan around the chaos instead of waiting for the chaos to end.

If your life doesn’t have a quiet season coming either, that’s your permission to stop waiting for one.

Fun P.S.

Madisons parents have a bar built right behind their house, and this weekend Mark walked us (mainly me, minus when I forced Mads to try) through a whiskey tasting… twelve year, fourteen year, single barrel, double barrel, the whole story behind why each one is made the way it’s made. I asked about a hundred questions and he never once got tired of answering. I love people like that. People who light up talking about what they know and don’t mind you wanting to understand it too.

And on the complete opposite end of chill, Ledger would not give Tristen a single break the entire trip. Bath time. Bed time. Nap time. All Tristen, no substitutes accepted. Nana status: officially locked in.

Go be who you’re becoming.

Talk soon.

Hey you, I turned 42 this week, and somewhere between the candles and the math of “if I live to 100, that’s 42% done,” I had a whole moment. More on that below. One Thing to Think About This Week 42 years old. If I live to be 100, that’s 42% complete. Scary to think about… but honestly? Motivating too. It made me realize how easy it is to coast on “I’ll get to it eventually.” Mobility work. Gratefulness. Flossing your damn teeth. The tiny stuff that feels optional until you’re 80 wishing...

Hey you, This week I finally named the thing quietly sabotaging me since the marathon, and it wasn’t motivation. It was research. Turns out you can “plan” your way into being completely stuck. One Thing to Think About This Week I was talking to a friend about my YouTube rut and the recent realization that I’ve been taking in so much creator advice… all of it good, all of it well-intentioned, and it kept me stuck instead of setting me free. I gave him an example. Told him about a creator who...

Hey you, It’s Sunday, which means the 90-day challenge is officially over. And I’ve got thoughts. Some fitness, some feet, some feelings, one not very dirty cabin air filter. Let’s get into it. One Thing to Think About This Week I downloaded Mark Manson’s app, Purpose, a while back and never even started the trial because I wanted to give it a real shot before judging it. And it got me thinking… we do this with everything. We want something to be amazing for us, but if we don’t give it the...
